What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a gentle healing practice in which one person places their hands on the body of another (or themselves). What is more intimate than the touch of another?

Healing through touch probably dates back to the origins of the family, when one person first reached out to touch or hold another to ease their pain.

During Reiki, there is a channeling or focusing of energy through the hands of the practitioner.  The recipient may feel warmth or tingling where the hands are placed, although the identification of sensation is not necessary for Reiki to be effective.  These benefits are frequently noticed:

• reduced stress
• release of pain or discomfort
• emotional calming
• deep relaxation
• expanded spiritual awareness
• a meditative state
• increased intuition
• heightened well being.

Reiki means "universal life energy".  The "ki" in Reiki is the same as the Chinese qi (or ch’i) and refers to the internal life force that animates all beings.  Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese minister (1865-1926), discovered the healing methods of ancient spiritual masters, including a sequence for placing hands as well as the use of powerful symbols, and he developed and passed these teachings on as Reiki.

Energy follows attention.  When the body is touched, ki (chi, qi, prana, vital life force) is awakened and flows more easily.  This movement of ki is essential for health and happiness.  Reiki is an effortless way to promote and increase the circulation of this unseen energy.   When integrated into love-making, the Reiki touch creates a soft yet vibrant connection.

"Attunements" are formal practices used by a Reiki teacher to open a channel to the Reiki energy within the student practitioner.  The attunement procedure itself can be a transformative spiritual event.  Certain mental symbols are taught and used to increase the potency of a session and for distance healing.

The intentions of the healer and the recipient contribute to the power of touch.   Reiki between lovers is an intimate experience of conscious and awakened energy.
